Guillermo Villamizar is a Colombian visual artist and a former art critic. At some point he discovered the relations of asbestos magnate Ernest Stephan Schmidheiny with one of the most important art collections of Latin American art.
Since then (2012) his work has focused on identifying all those institutional processes that define asbestos public policies in his country. As a result of this and from the direction of the Colombia Asbestos Free Foundation he achieved the banning of asbestos in Colombia in 2019 in a joint work with other academic, political and civil society organizations.
His work continues to exert a close influence so that the 1968 law that banned asbestos in his country fulfills three clear purposes: 1. Adequate public policy for the management of asbestos abatement. Identification and monitoring of people exposed to asbestos and 3. Comprehensive surveillance of attempts to use asbestos tailings to extract other minerals.
