Professor Roger Willey

Roger graduated with a Degree in Physics, followed by a Doctorate in Materials Science. After a period in industrial research he joined academia where his novel work (before proper asbestos regulations, Guidance Notes, etc enabled him to start the first private Asbestos Test House in Scotland, and one of the first in the UK, in 1978. Following this he has been involved in most of the developments of test methods and legislation in the UK and was heavily involved in the HSE rollout of CAR 2012 and the introduction of Regulation 4. For over 40 years, he has lectured and worked in the UK, Europe, Canada, the USA, Nigeria, India, the Falkland Islands, Japan, Turkey and, currently, in Chile, South America.

In 2014 Roger received the IOSH President’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his Services to Health & Safety in the UK. In 2016 he received the prestigious Silver Medal Award for Meritorious Endeavours in Environmental Health, presented by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS). In 2018 he received the Life Time Achievement Award from the United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association for his work in the Asbestos Industry.
